Delhi beat Mumbai to lift Col CK Nayudu Trophy

With a five-wicket win over Mumbai, Delhi clinched the Under 23 Col CK Nayudu Trophy, 2017-18 at the BKC Ground in Mumbai. The Simarjeet Singh-led (6/73) attack restricted Mumbai to a modest score in the first innings in their own backyard while Gourav Kumar (four-for) helped keep the hosts in the check their second outing.

Opener Anuj Rawat, who had led the way for a first innings lead with a 103-ball 83 the returned to set-up the 238-run chase with an 87-ball 75. Shivank Vashisth too contributed useful runs and chipped in with the ball as well.

Put in to bat, Jay Bista and H Tamore got Mumbai off to a good start with a 119-run opening stand. 27 runs after Lalit Yadav dismissed Bista, Simarjeet claimed Tamore leaving Mumbai on 146 for two. Mumbai failed to build on the platform as Simarjeet ran through the lineup not allowing for partnerships to build. The bowler castled A Sardesai four runs later while Gourav followed up with the wicket of Siddharth Akre.

Complemented by the rest of the Delhi attack, Simarjeet wrapped-up Mumbai for 230 in 58 overs. Shivank Vashisth also chipped in with two wickets.

Rawat and Hiten Dalal the built a 127-run opening stand to build on the advantage given by the bowlers. The pair were scoring at a steady pace until Bista accounted for Dalal to end the flourishing partnership. Rawat then took Delhi to Stumps at 141 for one with Yash Sehrawat.

Having added 15 runs to his overnight score, Rawat was sent back for 83 by Minad Manjrekar early on the second day. Sairaj Patil then followed up with the wicket of Sherawat to leave the side on 179 for three. The Delhi lineup too fumbled, Vashisth made a fighting (44* off 76) to take the side to a first innings lead. Delhi declared their innings on 260 for nine with a 30-run lead. Patil and Manjrekar finished with four and three wickets respectively.

Bista was once again sent back early; Gourav claimed the Mumbai captain to give Delhi a crucial breakthrough leaving the home team on 22 for one. Simarjeet trapped Vaidak Murkar lbw with Mumbai on 29. Tamore , who was striving to shape the innings was removed for 40 by Vashisth leaving Mumbai on 83 for three and six runs later Dafedar was the bowler’s next scalp leaving the Mumbai innings precariously poised. Sardesai and S Mulani then saw Mumbai through to the end of Day 2 at 104 for four.

31 runs into the third day’s play, Gourav bowled Sardesai and a while later Tejas Baroka followed up with the wicket to leave Mumbai on 156 for six. Akre (63 off 158) toiled to keep the innings afloat with the lower-order and helped set Delhi a respectable target.

Rawat once again shaped the Delhi innings. Although he lost his opening partner with 11 runs on the board, the opener kept the 238-run chase on course. He took Delhi to stumps at 123 for two with Jonty Sidhu.

While Rawat was the first to depart on the last day leaving Delhi on 132 for three, the middle-order ensured Delhi attained the target comfortably. Sidhu made 40 while Dinesh More saw the team to the finish line with an unbeaten 46-run knock.
