Punjab, Railways, HP, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Kerala and Maharashtra post wins

Punjab, Railways, Himachal, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Kerala and Maharashtra posted outright wins on the fourth day of the third round of the Ranji Trophy 2017-18. Chhattisgarh claimed a first innings lead against Vidarbha, while Tamil Nadu seized a first innings lead against Mumbai and Andhra clinched a first innings lead against Odisha in drawn matches.

Here are the highlights of the day:

Group A

Assam vs Railways: Railways received a bonus point for their innings and 184-run win over Assam. 

Assam were trailing by 198 runs with three wickets in hand when play resumed on the final day of the match. Amit Mishra accounted for Pritam Das while Anureet Singh (5/28) claimed Abu Nechim Ahmed and Dhiraj Goswami to bundle out the hosts for 55 and wrap-up the game in the morning.

Uttar Pradesh vs Maharashtra:
Maharashtra beat UP by 31 runs Lucknow.

Maharashtra added 26 runs to their overnight score for the loss of three wickets in the morning before declaring their innings on 282 for seven. Having set the hosts a 324-run target, Chirag Khurana-led attack bowled UP out for 292. The bowler claimed 6/131 to take his tally of wickets in the match to 12 wickets (6/53 in the first innings).

Karnataka vs Hyderabad: Shreyas Gopal (4/91) and K Gowtham (3/92) bowled Karnataka to a 59-run win. 

After Hyderabad resumed their innings on 92 for two on the last day, Gowtham trapped Tanmay Agarwal lbw to leave the visitors on 103 for three. The spinner also bowled Akash Bhandari later. Vinay Kumar, Karun Nair and Stuart Binny picked a wicket each while Shreyas Gopal claimed the tail and wrapped-up the Hyderabad innings for 320.

Group B

Jharkhand vs Haryana: Jharkhand registered a 10-wicket win over Haryana in the third round of the ongoing season of the tournament.

After Haryana resumed their second innings on 141 for four, they were bowled out for 296 by the Shahbaz Nadeem-led attack. The spinner claimed six for 93 while Varun Aaron and Sunny Gupta picked two wickets each to set-up a win. Although Rajat Paliwal (93 off 237) and R Sharma (71 off 201) strove to keep the innings in the fray, once their stand was ended by Nadeem the rest of the lineup caved in to the Jharkhand attack.

After Nadeem claimed Paliwal to leave Haryana on 248 for five, Haryana were bowled out for 296. Ishan Kishan and Mohammed Nazim Siddiqui chased down the 80-run target with ease.

J & K vs Gujarat: Gujarat sailed to an innings and 64 runs win on the third day.

Kerala vs Team Rajasthan: Propelled by Jalaj Saxena’s century, Kerala declared their innings on 250 for four after resuming on 217 for two. The batsman’s unbeaten 105-run knock helped set the visitors a 343-run target.

Kerala then bowled Team Rajasthan out for 211 and claimed a 131-run win. Jalaj, who had claimed eight wickets in the first innings, picked two more to complete another ten-wicket haul. S Joseph claimed five for 44 as they bowled the team to a thumping win.

Group C

Andhra vs Odisha:
Andhra gained three points on the basis of a first innings lead against Odisha. 

While Andhra had declared their innings on 584 for five, Odisha resumed their wobbly innings on 294 for six on the fourth day. Biplab Samantray was the last to return to the pavilion; dismissed by Ravi Teja for 72 off 220 balls. The bowler finished with three wickets in the innings while Bhargav Bhatt took four to wrap up the Odisha innings for 391.

Having seized a 193-run lead, Andhra enforced the follow on and Odisha were 152 for seven when the match was called off in a draw.

Mumbai vs Tamil Nadu:
Tamil Nadu gained three points on the basis of a first innings lead while Mumbai picked one from the drawn match.

Shreyas Iyer and Akhil Herwadkar (132 off 244) both posted centuries after resuming the innings on the last day of the match. While the stylish No 3 batsman pilfered runs of the TN attack en route his century, Herwadkar built his innings patiently.

Iyer slammed 138 off 124 balls with 11 boundaries and nine sixes until he was run out. The top-order batsman scored runs off the opposition effortlessly as he launched the ball over the boundary during his sparkling knock.

After his departure with the result a foregone conclusion, Mumbai continued to bat till the match was called off in a draw. After resuming on 85 for one, Mumbai were 371 for five when the match finished in a draw.

Tripura vs Madhya Pradesh:
Madhya Pradesh cantered to a ten-wicket win over Tripura on the third day to take their points tally to 14 on the penultimate day.

Group D

Goa vs Punjab: Punjab beat Goa by an innings and 133 runs to register their first win of the tournament in the ongoing season.

Following on, Goa resumed their innings on 67 for two; trailing by 322 runs on the last day of the match. After adding 17 runs to the overnight total, Sagun Kamat was the first to be sent back Manpreet Singh Grewal. The pacer followed up with the wicket of Regan Pinto to leave the hosts on 90 for four. Raghu Sharma then claimed three wickets while Jiwanjot Singh affected a run out to wreck the middle-order and leave Goa tottering on 122 for eight.

Darshan Misal was stranded on 64 as Vinay Choudhary claimed the last two wickets to bowl Goa out for 256.

Services vs Himachal: Gurvinder Singh bowled Himachal to a 97-run win with a six-wicket haul after setting Services a 326-run target. The bowler registered his maiden ten-wicket haul (4/58 and 6/52) as he helped his team to their first outright win of the season.

After Services resumed their innings on 28 for one, Gurvinder Singh and co ran through the line even as Ravi Chauhan (97 off 209) strove to hold the innings afloat. Overnight batsman, V Yadav was run out by S Verma leaving the side on 62 for two. Nakul Verma was trapped lbw by S Verma 38 runs later while A Vashisht followed up with the wicket of Amit Pachhara a bit later.

While Vashisht later accounted for Chauhan, Gurvinder claimed the lower half of the line-up to bowl Services out for 228.

Vidarbha vs Chhattisgarh:
Chhattisgarh gained three points on the basis of a first innings lead from the drawn match against Vidarbha.

Vidarbha were trailing by 158 runs with four wickets in hand and were bowled out for an addition of 104 runs to the overnight score. Vishal Singh claimed one while S Ruikar added two more to his wickets tally and Jatin Saxena picked one wicket to bowl the team out for 435.

Having clinched a 54-run first innings lead, Chhattisgarh batted again and had posted 195 for nine when the match was called off in a draw.
