Delhi, Bengal, Vidarbha book semi-final spots

Gautam Gambhir (95) helped Delhi chase down a modest total and register a convincing win against Madhya Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy 2017-18 quarter-finals.

Aditya Sarvate picked a six-wicket haul while R Gurbani picked two wickets and Karn Sharma chipped in with the key wicket of Sanju Samson to bowl Vidarbha to a massive win over Kerala.

Anustup Majumdar too scored a century as Bengal piled on the runs until the match ended in a draw. Bengal led by Manoj Tiwary team entered the semi-finals on the basis of a first innings lead.

Karnataka vs Mumbai in Vidarbha:
Karnataka beat Mumbai by an innings and 20 runs in less than four days in the quarter-final clash.

Kerala vs Vidarbha in Surat:
Vidarbha beat Kerala by 412 runs to enter the semi-finals of Ranji Trophy 2017-18.

Resuming their innings on 431 for six on the last day, Vidarbha declared on 507 for nine in the morning.
With a first innings lead secured, Vidarbha eyed an outright win, setting Kerala a 578-run target on the last day. After R Gurbani set the tone with the wicket of Jalaj Saxena in the first over leaving Kerala on five for one, Aditya Sarvate wrecked the lienup to bowl the side to a thumping win. The left-arm spinner claimed six for 41 as they skittled Kerala out for 165.

A Wakhare claimed Mohammed Azharuddeen to leave Kerala on 59 for two and 27 runs later the Karn Sharma accounted for Sanju Samson (18). Sachin Baby then forged a 51-run stand with Salman Nizar until being trapped lbw by Gurbani leaving the side reeling at 137 for four. From there on it was a quick slide for Kerala as Sarvate ran through the lineup.

Delhi vs Madhya Pradesh in Vijayawada: With a comprehensive seven-wicket win over Madhya Pradesh, Delhi have sailed into the semi-finals.

Chasing 217, Delhi resumed their innings on eight without loss with Kunal Chandela and V Tokas. The night-watchman was sent back by Ishwar Pandey in the morning leaving the side on 11 for one. Gautam Gambhir then joined the opener in shaping the chase.

Batting at a steady pace, the Chandela-Gambhir pair had taken Delhi to 109 when the opener was removed by Mihir Hirwani for 57. With Dhruv Shorey the left-hand batsman then continued to keep the chase on course. However, five runs short of his century and with Delhi still requiring 13 runs to attain the target, Gambhir was run out.

Shorey and Nitish Rana then took Delhi to victory.

Gujarat vs Bengal in Jaipur:
Bengal qualified for the semi-finals on the basis of a first innings lead against Gujarat in the drawn game.

At 483 for four, Bengal already had a humongous 613-run lead when they resumed their second innings on the last day of the match. Writtick Chatterjee, who was batting overnight on 213 added three runs to his tally before returning to the pavilion. Bengal were 491 for five when B Amit joined Anustup Majumdar in the middle. 47 runs later, Amit was sent back by R Bhatt which brought Aamir Gani to the crease.

With the result a foregone conclusion, Mujumdar and Gani then continued to pile on runs.

Majumdar was batting on 132 while Gani was on 53 at Tea. Play couldn’t be resumed again due to bad light and the match was called off in a draw.
