Manish Pandey posts 75 as spinners dominate in Patiala

Manish Pandey made a valuable 75 even as Saurashtra spun Karnataka out for 200. Anupam Sanklecha claimed a four for as Maharashtra looked to keep Odisha in check. After the Sumit Narwal (four-for)-led attack skittled Vidarbha out for 183, Delhi lost Shikhar Dhawan early in the innings.

Ishank Jaggi and Saurabh Tiwary lift Jharkhand to 251 for four against Assam.

Group B, Round 8 – Day 1 Round-up:

Saurashtra vs Karnataka in Patiala:
Kar 1st inn 200/10 in 64.1 overs (M Pandey 75, V Jivrajani 3/41, J Chauhan 3/52); Sau 1st inn 19/2 in 9 overs (S Patel 10*, V Kumar 2/1) Trail by 181 runs

Spinners dominated the proceedings in Patiala after Vinay Kumar elected to bat. While Kamlesh Makvana claimed both the openers, debutant left-arm spinner, J Chauhan and off-spinner V Jivrajani picked three wickets apiece as Saurashtra bowled Karnataka out for 200. With a well-compiled 122-ball 75, middle-order bat Manish Pandey put up a strong resistance to keep the innings in the fray until he was sent back by Jaydev Unadkat. The pacer also claimed the second highest run-getter of the Karnataka lineup – Shreyas Gopal for 38.

Captain Vinay Kumar then dealt early blows by claiming Saurashtra’s debutant opener K Parmar and followed up with the wicket of Samarth Vyas to leave the side on four for two. Snell Patel then took the team to stumps with Sheldon Jackson.

Odisha vs Maharashtra in Wayanad: Odisha 1st inn 311/9 in 82.1 overs (B Samantray 89, D Behera 58, A Sanklecha 4/75, M Sayyad 3/58)

After Maharashtra opted to field, Anupam Sanklecha struck twice in the fifth over to leave Odisha on 10 for two. 21 runs later, M Sayyad accounted for Saurabh Rawat to peg the team further back. However, even as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, Biplab Samantray’s 89 and Deepak Behera’s half-century besides useful contributions from the rest of the lineup helped Odisha post 311 for nine on the first day.

Sanklecha finished the day with a four-for while M Sayyad picked three wickets.

Vidarbha vs Delhi in Chennai: Vid 1st 183/10 in 62.3 overs (S Shrivastava 62, S Wagh 46*, S Narwal 4/38, NA Saini 3/30); Delhi 1st inn 12/1 in 3 overs (S Dhawan 6, G Gambhir 2*, R Gurbani 1/11) Trail by 171 runs

Sumit Narwal and NA Saini bowled Vidarbha out for 183 after Gautam Gambhir elected to field. While the Delhi attack ran through the lineup, Shalabh Shrivastava put up a determined 62 and S Wagh scored an unbeaten 46. Although Delhi lost Shikhar Dhawan for six, Gambhir saw the team through to the end of day’s play with night-watchman Pradeep Sangwan.

Assam vs Jharkhand in Vizianagaram: Jharkhand 1st inn 251/4 in 90 overs (S Tiwary 88, I Jaggi 80*, AN Ahmed 1/28, D Goswami 1/38)

Assam pacer Krishna Das claimed Pratyush Singh for 30 to end the opening stand for 36. A while later, Abu Nechim Ahmed claimed Anand Singh to leave the opposition on 69 for two. However, Saurabh Tiwary held the innings together until the fag end of the day. After Dhiraj Goswami bowled Sumit Kumar for 32, the middle-order bat joined forces with Ishank Jaggi to stabilize the innings. In a determined display, he made 88 off 174 balls before he was sent back by Arup Das late in the day.

At the end of the fourth wicket partnership for 151, Rahul Shukla joined Jaggi in seeing the team through to stumps. While the middle-order bat was unbeaten on 88, the night-watchman was yet to open his account when play ended for the day.
