Centurion Virat Singh helps Jharkhand take lead

Top-order bat, Virat Singh (107) has given Jharkhand an upper hand against Haryana as they battle for a spot in the semi-finals of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2016-17. After Jasprit Bumrah’s five-for, Samit Gohil has further strengthened Gujarat’s position. With an unbeaten century, the opener anchored Gujarat’s second innings and put them in an advantageous position.

The Mumbai attack came out all guns blazing on the third day to seize a first innings lead, while Aditya Tare has once again helped steady the innings after losing three early wickets.

Fortunes swung as the Mumbai bowlers bowled Hyderabad out to gain a narrow 14-run first innings lead, but then the defending champions lost three quick wickets and were wobbling at 52 for three. 

While Kevin Almeida was bowled for one by CV Milind, Mohammed Siraj dealt big blows by capturing the key wickets of Shreyas Iyer (12) and Suryakumar Yadav (3). However, Aditya Tare then joined Praful Waghela in building the innings. The pair played patiently to see Mumbai through to stumps in an unbroken 50-run partnership. The opener was batting on 27 with the captain on 39 as they took Mumbai to 102 for three at the end of day’s play with a lead on 116.

Earlier, the Abhishek Nayar-led attack bowled seized the advantage back from Hyderabad by bowling them out for 280 after resuming on 167 for three in the morning. The S Badrinath-led team lost their remaining seven wickets for the addition of 113 runs to their overnight score. The all-rounder claimed B Sandeep in the morning to give the side their first breakthrough of the day. Tanmay Agarwal, who had anchored the innings was the next to be sent back six runs later. Shardul Thakur accounted for the opener. 17 overs later, spinner Vijay Gohil dealt a double blow to leave the opponents on 255 for seven. A bit later, Akshay Girap got the better of CV Milind while the left-arm spinner picked the wicket of Mohammed Siraj and Thakur accounted for Sumanth Kolla to bowl the team out for 280 runs.

Deepak Behera remained not out on 41 as Jasprit Bumrah and H Patel claimed the last two wickets to wrap up the Odisha innings for 199 after resuming on 184 for eight.

S Gohil and Priyank Panchal got Gujarat off to a good start in the second innings. Building on the 64-run first innings lead, the duo added 149 runs for the first wicket until Panchal was sent back by Dhiraj Singh for 81. A while later, the bowler also accounted for B Merai while Basant Mohanty followed up with the wicket of R Bhatt to leave Gujarat on 238 for three.

While wickets fell at regular intervals after the end of the opening stand, Gohil held the innings together and was unbeaten on 110 with Manprit Juneja on six when play ended for the day. His century had propelled Gujarat’s lead to a solid 310 and put them in a advantageous position against Odisha.

Powered by Virat Singh’s century, Jharkhand seized an 87-run first innings lead in the ongoing knockout match at the Motibaug Cricket Ground. However, they had lost three wickets upfront after resuming on 228 for three without a run added to the scoreboard. Harshal Patel claimed Ishank Jaggi and Ishan Kishan off successive deliveries in the third over of the morning and followed up with the wicket of Kaushal Singh in his next.

With Shahbaz Nadeem, the top-order bat then helped his side to a first innings lead until Yuzvendra Chahal struck. The spinner accounted for the lower-order batsman to reduce Jharkhand to 285 for seven. After 14 runs, the leg-spinner also accounted for Virat. Amit Mishra then trapped Rahul Shukla lbw and with Ashish Kumar unable to bat, the Jharkhand innings ended for 345.

In Haryana’s second innings, Nitin Saini and Shubham Rohilla put together 79 runs for the opening stand until Samar Quadri accounted for the latter. The leg spinner also sent back the other opener 12 runs later. Shivam Chauhan and Chaitanya Bishnoi then took the team to stumps at 146 for two.
