Prtihvi Shaw’s ton takes Mumbai to 46th final

Debutant Prithvi Shaw powered Mumbai to a comprehensive win with a century in the semi-final clash against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy 2016-17. He joined the list of players which includes the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Amol Muzumdar and Jatin Paranjape to score a century on debut in first-class cricket.

In pursuit of their 42nd title, the defending champions will take on Gujarat, who have beaten Jharkhand to qualify for the final.

17-year old Prithvi Shaw made the most of the opportunity presented to him by scoring a crucial 120 runs to propel Mumbai to a six-wicket win against Tamil Nadu. Chasing 251 runs, the debutant resumed the innings on five without loss with Praful Waghela on the last morning. The pair put the chase on course with a 90-run stand until Baba Aparajith ended the stand. Waghela’s miscued sweep shot was caught at square-leg. Shaw then took the team to Lunch at 113 for one with Shreyas Iyer.

Closing in on the target, the pair had added 91 runs for the second wicket when the No 3 bat was bowled by Vijay Shankar for 40. Surya Kumar Yadav then held up one end as the opener inched towards his maiden ton. However, while on 99, the youngster hit Shankar to gully but with the bowler having bowled a no-ball. he got another chance to etch his name in the history books. Later in the over, he reached the three-figure mark with a single. With victory on the horizon, Surya Kumar departed for 34 and three runs later, the opener followed him back to the dressing room with 10 runs needed to win.

Aditya Tare then took the Mumbai to the finish line with Siddhesh Lad.
