All-rounder Jimmy Neesham has been included in the 15-man New Zealand squad for the upcoming Test series against India. New Zealand will play Tests in Kanpur (Sep 22-26), Kolkata (Sep 30-Oct 4) and Indore (Oct 8-12), followed by a five-match ODI series.
After suffering back pain during Blackcaps’ tour of Australia last summer, Neesham missed out on international cricket but appeared for Otago Volts and recently ended a stint with Derbyshire in the English domestic summer.
From the side that recently toured South Africa, fast bowler Matt Henry and opener Jeet Raval were dropped. Meanwhile, the selectors showed faith in Martin Guptill, who had a dry run in South Africa, getting three single digit scores in two Tests. All-rounder Corey Anderson was not considered as he is yet to recover from an injury.
Selector Gavin Larsen said Neesham's all-round ability was key to his inclusion. “Jimmy has put in a lot of work to make sure he is physically ready for a return to Test cricket,” said Larsen.
“Having two pace bowling all-rounders in Jimmy and Doug Bracewell helps the balance of the squad, particularly if playing on pitches which demand a spin-heavy bowling attack.”
New Zealand have not won a Test series in India and Larsen said it was crucial for their players to do well in the spin friendly conditions. “India’s the No.2 ranked side in the world, and their record at home is formidable.
“We’re yet to win a Test series over there and that’s motivating for everyone. We’ve got three Tests to try create a special piece of history.”
