Gugale (351*) and Bawane (258*) break records to put Maharashtra in driver’s seat

Records tumbled at the Wankhede Stadium as Maharashtra captain Swapnil Gugale and Ankit Bawne batted through the day to post a unbroken 594-run stand, second highest partnership in first-class cricket.

Basant Mohanty helped Odisha seize a first innings lead against Saurashtra with a four-for, while R Samarth has set the game up for Karnataka with his maiden double ton against Jharkhand. In Vizag, Mahipal Lomror took Team Rajasthan to a first innings lead against Assam.

Odisha vs Saurashtra in Hyderabad:

The Basant Mohanty-led attack bowled Odisha to a 42-run first innings lead by wrapping up the Saurashtra innings for 186 on the second day. The pacer claimed four while his opening partner, Suryakant Pradhan claimed three wickets and spinner Dhiraj Singh took three. While the Odisha attack kept the batsmen in check, Jaydev Shah top-scored for his team with 64.

When play ended for the day, Odisha were 62 for two in the second innings with a lead of 104.

Records were broken at the Wankhede stadium as Swapnil Gugale (351*) and Ankeet Bawane (258*) took Maharashtra to 635 for two in an unbroken 594-run stand before declaring the innings. They surpassed the record of 539 runs for third wicket between Sagar Jogiyani and Ravindra Jadeja’s as they propelled Maharashtra to a massive total. En route, Gugale posted the highest score on captaincy debut for Maharashtra as he scored his triple ton while Bawne scored a double century.

Gugale 351* and Bawne 258*’s marathon partnership is the highest partnership in first-class cricket in India.

When they declared their innings, their stand was just 30 runs short of the world record for the third wicket held by Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene (624 runs stand).

At the end of day’s play Delhi were 21 without loss from five overs.

Jharkhand vs Karnataka in Noida: Karnataka 1st inn 577/6 decl. (R Samarth 235, S Binny 97, A Kumar 3/78); Jharkhand 1st inn 9/0 in 5 overs; Trail by 568 runs

Resuming his innings on 118, R Samarth continued to anchor the Karnataka innings on the second day. Complemented by the middle-order, the opener scored 235 as he ensured the team a formidable first innings score. Stuart Binny missed out on his ton by three runs as Karnataka dominated the innings and were 577 for six when they declare the first innings later in the day.

Coming in to bat at the fag end of the day, Jharkhand were nine without loss at stumps.

Mahipal Lomror batted Team Rajasthan to a first innings lead on the second day with able support from the middle order. The youngster was unbeaten on 84 has he took the team to stumps on 208 for three with Rajat Bhatia (28*). Ashok Menaria had chipped in with a valuable 44 while Vineet Saxena made 30 as Team Rajasthan worked through the day to gain advantage.
