Playing in only his fourth Ranji Trophy match, Rishabh Pant took the game to Maharashtra with a well paced 308-run knock at the Wankhede stadium. Batting with the lower-order, the young Delhi middle-order batsman brought his side within sniffing distance of overhauling Maharashtra’s first innings score of 635 runs.

While he had lost partners at regular intervals on the penultimate day, he found an able ally in Varun Sood. Coming out to bat with Pant, the No.8 bat, stood stoically at one end for over a session and a half in a 182-run stand. While the middle-order batsman culled runs, Sood blocked. In a display of patience, he at one point had scored only 11 of 100 balls and hit his first boundary off the 110th delivery that he faced.

Pant at the other end milked the bowlers as he reached his double ton and then went on to post a triple hundred. Having kept wickets for almost two days, he built a marathon innings in an effort to help his side secure a first innings lead. His 300 came off 320 balls. He became the second Indian wicketkeeper to score a triple ton after KS Bharat. In the process with his triple hundred this was the first time in first-class cricket that batsmen from both teams had scored a triple century. However, while on 308, he was sent back by Satyajit Bachhav when Delhi was on 577. Having got a foot into the door, Maharashtra then wrapped up the tail at the stroke of tea.

Maharashtra bowled Delhi out for 590 to secure a 45-run first innings lead. When the match was called off in a draw Maharashtra were 58 without loss in the second innings.
