Gowtham, S Gopal spin Karnataka to a thrilling win

After their batsmen set up the game for Karnataka, K Gowtham (seven wickets) and S Gopal (three wickets) bowled the Karun Nair-led team to a resounding win against Assam in Mumbai.

Delhi, Maharashtra and Jharkhand claimed three points each on the basis of a first innings lead against Odisha, Team Rajasthan and Vidarbha respectively.

Group B, Round 4 – Day 4 Round-up:

Delhi vs Odisha in Mohali:
Odisha 1st inn 237/10 in 77.4 overs (S Senapati 76, B Samantray 62, V Sood 3/23, S Narwal 2/34, M Sharma 2/52); Delhi 1st inn 495/8 decl in 144.5 overs (M Kumar 106*, M Sharma 81, D Singh 4/84); Odisha 2nd inn 274/8 in 133 overs (B Samantray 88, S Rawat 55, I Sharma 3/51) Match drawn. Delhi took first innings lead.

Vital innings from middle-order batsmen Biplab Samantray and Saurabh Rawat helped Odisha pull off a draw and claim one point from the game. At 109 for four, Odisha were trailing by 149 runs when they resumed the second innings on the fourth morning. Run out for 56, Govind Podder was the first to return to the dressing room for the addition of seven runs to the overnight total.

However, Samantray and Rawat stitched a stand to keep the innings alive and had taken Odisha to 250 when the former was sent back by Sumit Narwal. Seven runs later, Ishant Sharma accounted for Rawat. However, as the match headed to a draw it was called off with Odisha on 274 for eight in the second innings.

Match drawn. Maharashtra took first innings lead.

After Team Rajasthan resumed on 299 for eight, M Sayyad and A Sanklecha picked a wicket each to bowl the side out for 330. As Maharashtra looked to build on the 131-run lead and set the opposition a target they were skittled out for 145 by the Team Rajasthan pace attack. Skipper Pankaj Singh and TM Ul Haq claimed two wickets each while Nathu Singh picked three. A Choudhary and Mahipal Lomror chipped in with a wicket each.

Chasing the 277-run target, Team Rajasthan were on four without loss when the match was called off.

Assam vs Karnataka in Mumbai:

With a 245-run first innings lead, Karnataka had declared their innings and invited Assam to bat again later in the third day. On the fourth morning, Rahul Hazarika and Gokul Sharma resumed Assam’s second innings on 48 for one. With the team on 71, K Gowtham struck to end the partnership and continued to wreck the lineup. He claimed the first five wickets of the day to leave Assam reeling on 171 for six.

While the off-spinner ran through the lineup, Amit Verma strove to hold up one end. While Shreyas Gopal accounted for S Purkayastha, Gowtham sent back Verma for 74, leaving Assam on 236 for eight. He then followed up with the wicket of Arup Das to bring Karnataka on the brink of a possible innings win. However, AN Ahmed and Krishna Das denied the Karun Nair-led team a innings win as they took Assam to 264 before being bowled out; thus setting the opposition a 20-run target.

Gowtham claimed seven wickets while Shreyas finished with three wickets in the innings. R Samarth and Mayank Agarwal then took Karnataka to victory in three overs to still get a bonus point from the game.

Jharkhand vs Vidarbha in Wayanad:

Jharkhand had secured the first innings lead when they surpassed Vidarbha’s first innings total of 105 and posted 362 for eight before declaring their innings. Vidarbha then put up a better performance with the bat in their second outing and salvaged a draw. Resuming on 315 for three on the fourth morning, they posted 444 runs before being bowled out to set Jharkhand a 188-run target. However, the match finished in a draw. When play was called off, Jharkhand were 75 for four.
