Baroda shot out for 93

TN pacers – Aswin Crist and Vignesh K - helped skittle Baroda out for a sub-par total on the first day of the ongoing Ranji Trophy encounter. In Mysore, Mumbai opener Akhil Herwadkar along with useful contributions from Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav helped the team to a decent total. In Hyderabad Kuldeep Yadav’s unbeaten 62 along with Eklavya Dwivedi kept UP in an advantageous position.

Group A, Round 5 – Day 1 Round-up:

Mumbai vs Railways in Mysore: Mumbai 1st inn 244/5 (A Herwadkar 96, S Iyer 70, S Yadav 60*, K Sharma 3/56)

After Aditya Tare elected to bat in Mysore, Mumbai lost Kaustubh Pawar with 17 runs on the board. However, Akhil Herwadkar and Shreyas Iyer (70 off 73) then joined forces to stabilize the innings and lay the foundation for a solid total. The pair had taken the side to 130 when the stylish No 3 bat’s pacy innings was ended by Karan Thakur; trapped lbw.

With Suryakumar Yadav, Herwadkar then took the team past 200. With Mumbai on 207, the Railways captain, Karn Sharma stopped the opener four runs short of what would have been his third century of the season. The spinner then followed up with the key wickets of his opposite number and also Siddhesh Lad to leave the side on 229 for five.

At stumps, Suryakumar was batting on 60 with Abhishek Nayar on one.

Tamil Nadu vs Baroda in Raipur: Baroda 1st inn 93/10 in 34.3 overs (K Devdhar 26, Vignesh K 5/23, A Crist 3/39); TN 1st inn 79/1 in 31 overs (A Mukund 40*, B Indrajith 18*, S Mangalorkar 1/24) Trail by 14 runs

After Abhinav Mukund opted to bat, Vignesh K and Aswin Crist bundled Baroda out for 93. Vignesh K claimed both openers to leave Baroda on 71 for two. Aswin then ran out Deepak Hooda in the next over and followed up with three wickets an over later. He accounted for Pinal Shah, Yusuf Pathan and Swapnil Singh to leave the opposition reeling on 72 for six. The pacers then wrapped up the Baroda innings in 34.3 overs.

In reply to the paltry total, TN were 79 for one at stumps. S Mangalorkar claimed Kaushik Gandhi to end the opening stand for 32. Mukund then carried the innings forward with Baba Indrajith until bad light stopped play and had to be called off a while later.

Punjab vs Uttar Pradesh in Hyderabad: UP 1st inn 300/6 in 90 overs (K Yadav 62*, E Dwivedi 60, R Singh 50, S Gill 3/52, S Sharm 2/68)

Sandeep Sharma got Punjab off to a good start by leaving UP on 31 for two with the wickets of both UP openers – Tanmay Srivastava (0) and Samarth Singh (12). But the middle-order worked to shape the innings even as SS Gill struck at regular intervals. The bowler accounted for SN Khan and followed up with the wickets of Umang Sharma (49) and Rinku Singh (50) to leave UP on 143 for five.

However, Eklavaya Dwivedi found and able ally in Kuldeep Yadav in taking the innings forward. The pair had added 101 run for the sixth wicket when the middle-order batsman was bowled by Vinay Choudhary.
Kuldeep (62*) then rallied on to take the team to stumps with Saurbah Kumar (39*).
