Karnataka cruise to comprehensive win

Captain Vinay Kumar starred in Karnataka’s thumping win over Vidarbha in the fifth round of Ranji Trophy 2016-17. After scoring a half-century in the second innings, he returned to claim a five-for for the side.

Despite centuries by stand-in captain Unmukt Chand and Rishabh Pant, Delhi were unable to avert the follow on as the rest of the lineup caved in to the Jharkhand Attack. Odisha too were asked to follow on by Team Rajasthan. Jaydev Unadkat claimed six, but KB Arun Karthick’s half-century helped Assam to first innings lead.

Group B, Round 5 – Day 3 Round-up:


Assam vs Saurashtra in Kolkata: Saurashtra 1st inn 153/10 in 52.4 overs (J Unadkat 46*, S Sanandia 29, D Goswami 1/28); Assam 1st inn 171/10 in 62.4 overs (KB Arun Karthick 57, J Unadkat 6/48); Saurashtra 2nd inn 0/1 in 2 overs. Trail by 18 runs.

Remaining unbeaten in 46, Jaydev Unadkat helped Saurhastra to 153 before being bowled out on Day 3 after resuming in 121 for nine. The pacer then returned to claim six Assam wickets, but KB Arun Karthick’s 57 along with useful contributions from Amit Verma (28), S Purkyastha and others helped Assam secure a first innings lead before being bowled out for 171.

At stumps, Saurashtra had lost opener Avi Barot to Arup Das and hadn’t opened their account in the two overs that they batted before play ended for the day.

Team Rajasthan vs Odihsa in Patiala: Team Raj 1st inn 323/10 in 105.4 overs (SF Khan 110, G Podder 3/59); Odisha 1st inn 172/10 in 54.1 overs (D Behera 67, P Singh 4/61); F/o Odisha 2nd inn 244/2 in 75 overs (S Senapati 90*, R Singh 89*, M Lomror 1/23) Lead by 93 runs

Team Rajasthan skipper, Pankaj Singh claimed the last two Odisha wickets on the third day to bowl the side out for 172 to secure a first innings lead. With a 151-run margin, he then enforced the follow to give his team an opportunity for an outright win. After resuming on 143 for eight helped the team to 169 until he was sent back for 67 by the pacer. And a bit later Dhiraj Singh was bowled by the bowler to end the innings.

Following on Sandeep Pattanaik and Ranjit Singh then put together 63 runs until R Chahar claimed the former to end the partnership. M Lomror then accounted for Govind Podder a while later, however, the opener found and able ally in S Senapati to take the team to stumps in an unbroken 159-run stand.

After the Ishan Kishan-led lineup raised a mountainous first innings total, the Jharkhand attack bowled Delhi out for 334 and enforced a follow on. After resuming the first innings on 225 for three, Delhi lost their remaining seven batsmen for the addition of 109 runs to the overnight score. Rishabh Pant departed for 117 after adding 10 runs to his overnight score while skipper Unmukt Chand registered 109 before returning to the dressing room. Ashish Kumar sent back both the overnight batsmen off successive overs to leave Delhi on 262 for five. From there on it was downhill for the side as Shahbaz Nadeem and Sunny Gupta wrapped up the innings and helped enforce a follow on.

Opening the innings with Dhruv Shorey, Unmukt Chand then helped post a 109-run opening stand until he was sent back by Sunny Gupta. With Nitish Rana, the opener then saw the team through to the end of day’s play. Delhi were 165 for one and led by one run at stumps on Day 3.

17 wickets fell in Vadodara on Day 3 as Karnataka posted victory. Skipper Vinay Kumar who was the top-scorer for the side in the second innings with 56 runs that helped set the opposition a stiff target, then returned to take a five-for and bowl the team to victory.
After they resumed on 108 for three in the morning, Karnataka were bowled out for 209 as the Shrikant Wagh-led attack ran through the lineup. He claimed four wickets while fellow pacer – Lalit finished with three wickets in the innings.

With bowlers getting purchase from the wicket, Vinay Kumar and Arvind Sreenath wrecked the Vidarbha lineup. The captain picked five for 28 while A Sreenath took two for 28 and Stuart Binny chipped in with one. Off-spinner, K Gowtham too picked two wickets to help wrap up the opposition and register a win with a day to spare.
