Baroda, Mumbai struggle on Day One

Having struggled to get an outright victory under their belt in the Ranji Trophy 2016-17 season, Uttar Pradesh have now given themselves a shot at full points after a promising start against table-toppers Mumbai. Led by Kuldeep Yadav’s 4/46, UP bowled Mumbai out for 233 runs on the first day of the sixth round Group A match despite Surya Kumar Yadav’s 99.

Baroda’s batting woes continued to haunt them as they were shot out for just 183 runs against Railways.

Group A, Round-up Day 1:

Uttar Pradesh v Mumbai: Mum 223/10 (Surya Kumar Yadav 99, Kuldeep Yadav 4/46) lead Uttar Pradesh lead Uttar Pradesh 22 for 1 (Samarth Singh 8*, Saurabh Kumar 5*; Tushar Deshpande 1/8) by 211 runs

Stylish batsman Suryakumar Yadav missed out on a century by just one run as Kuldeep Yadav continued his impressive show that started from the Duleep Trophy to skittle Mumbai out for 223 runs on the first day at SDNRW Ground, Mysore. Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Mumbai would be disappointed with their effort in the first innings. They had lost three wickets for 55 runs when a 59-run stand between Yadav and captain Aditya Tare (30) brought them slightly back on track. Kuldeep first ended the stand when he had Tare caught behind and then picked another big wicket of Abhishek Nayar to put Uttar Pradesh in front. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who opened the bowling bowled 13 overs aIn reply, UP were 22/1 with the loss Tanmay Srivastava for eight.

Railways vs Baroda: Baroda 183 (Dhiren Mistry 50, Kedar Devdhar 45; Avinash Yadav 5/50, Karn Sharma 3/ 57) lead Railways 39/ 0 (Shivakant Shukla 23*) by 144 runs.

Baroda’s batting problems continued to mar their camapaign as another dismal effort saw them being shot out for just 183 runs against Railways. Left-arm spinner Avinash Yadav claimed a five-for and Karn Sharma took three wickets as Baroda failed to reach even 200 for third straight time. For Baroda, Dhiren Mistry scored a century. At Stumps, Railways were on 39 without any loss.

Gujarat vs Madhya Pradesh: Guj 224/4 in 90 overs (Priyank Panchal 62; Ankit Sharma 2/60).

Priyank Panchal made a steady 62 as Gujarat ended at 224 for four on day one of their match against Madhya Pradesh at Nagothane. After a 75-run stand for the opening wicket with Samit Gohel, Panchal carried forward the Gujarat innings. Batting at No. 4, captain Parthiv Patel made 49, but missed out on a half-century. Though Gujarat have scored at only 2.48 runs per over, Manpreet Juneja is unbeaten on 44 and will look to score big to help Gujarat post a healthy first inning total. For Madhya Pradesh, left-arm spinner Ankit Sharma took 2/60.

Bengal vs Tamil Nadu: Bengal 190 for 3 (Manoj Tiwary 56, Agniv Pan 51*; Aswin Crist 1/ 19, Auswin Srinivas 1/33)

Run-making seemed to be difficult at the Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Ground in Rajkot, where Bengal batsmen failed to reach even 200 after playing out full 90 overs against Tamil Nadu. A total of 21 maiden overs were bowled by five TN bowlers. Fast bowler Aswin Christ put in a highly disciplined bowling effort, giving away just 19 runs from his 19 overs. Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary scored a half-century but was caught and bowled by Aushik Srinivas for 56.
