Pant’s breezy 75 hands Delhi first innings lead

Chirag Khurana remained unbeaten on 112 runs as Maharashtra posted a massive 542 runs in their Group B clash against Assam in Chennai. In-form Delhi wicket-keeper Rishabh Pant once again put up a strong display with a breezy knock of 75 to help his team secure a first innings lead.

Group B, Round 7 - Day 2 Round-up:

Delhi vs Team Rajasthan in Wayanad: Team Raj 238/10 in 71.3 overs (A Gautam 106, D Chahar 47, NA Saini 3/28, V Tokas 3/48) & 19/1 trail Delhi 307/10 in 91.4 overs (Rishabh Pant 75, T M Ul Haq 3/55) by 50 runs

Although Delhi were bowled out for 307 runs in 91.4 overs, they were still ahead of Team Rajasthan at the end of second day’s play. Resuming on 37, seasoned openers Gautam Gambhir (10) Shikhar Dhawan (38) were out in quick secession, but small contributions from the batting line-up helped them overhaul Team Rajasthan’s first innings score of 238 runs.

In-form youngster Rishabh Pant once against displayed his attacking brand of cricket as he slammed 75 off only 59 balls with the help of nine boundaries and three sixes. Earlier, playing his 100th first-class match, captain Pankaj Singh picked the important wicket of Dhawan, who is making a comeback post injury. Having secured a lead of 69 runs, Delhi reduced Team Rajasthan to 19/1 with Manan Sharma picking the lone wicket of Manender Singh, who was bowled.

Karnataka vs Odisha at Palam in New Delhi: Karnataka 179 (Chidambaram Gautam 54; Basant Mohanty 3 for 46, Biplab Samantray 2 for 20) v Odisha 318 for 9 (Saurabh Rawat 85, Biplab Samantray 58, Shreyas Gopal 5/73) lead by 139 runs.

Despite being 79/5, Odisha managed to secure a big first innings lead against Karnataka courtesy a late-order fightback led by wicket-keeper Saurabh Rawat’s 85 off 124 balls. After Biplab Samantray had added 61 for the sixth wicket with Abhishek Yadav, he joined hands with Rawat to pull Odisha out of trouble.

Samantray was extremely patient, batting for over four hours for his fifty, which he got in 164 balls. The long partnership was ended by Shreyas Gopal. The leg spinner completed his five-wicket haul in the innings as Odisha ended the day at 318/9 with a lead of 139 runs.

Saurashtra vs Vidarbha in New Delhi:
Sau 1st inn 301/10 in 86.1 overs (S Jackson 116, C Jani 78, R Gurbani 4/85) lead Vid 242/3 (Faiz Fazal 94, Sanjay Ramaswamy 77, Amitoze Singh 1 for 11) by 59 runs

An opening partnership of 179 runs frustrated Saurashtra as Sanjay Ramaswamy and Faiz Fazal took Vidarbha in sight of a first innings lead. Both the openers hit 10 boundaries each as the pair batted for 59.3 overs. Saurashtra skipper Jaydev Shah utilized as many as nine bowlers. Captain Fazal missed out on a century by six runs when Amitoze Singh had him caught by Deepak Punia. Earlier, Prerak Mankad had ended the long opening stand.

Assam vs Maharashtra in Chennai: Assam vs Maharashtra in Chennai: Maha 1st inn 542/10 in 90 overs (Kedar Jadhav 115, Chirag Khurana 112* Naushad Shaikh 97, Abu Nechim 3/83) lead Assam 132/3 (Rishav Das 53*, Anupam Sanklecha 3/45) by 410 runs.

After Kedar Jadhav hit 115 on the first day, Chirag Khurana remained unbeaten on 112 as Maharashtra posted a massive 542 in their first innings after opting to bat first in Chennai against Assam. Resuming his innings with wicket-keeper Vishant More, Khurana added 124 runs for the sixth wicket. 

Anupam Sanklecha picked all three Assam wickets to cap off a rewarding day. Assam trail by 410 runs and will have to dig in deep to overhaul Maharashtra’s big total on the third day.
