Baroda beat Bengal by 21 runs

Priyank Panchal batted for 10 hours and registered his maiden double century as Gujarat continued their domination over defending champions Mumbai for second day running. Japsrit Bumrah then claimed two wickets in his first two overs to put Mumbai under pressure.

Baroda completed a 21-run victory in the final session of Day Two in Lahli as Bengal were bowled out for 133 runs in the fourth innings. It was Bengal’s 400th first-class game.

After 23 wickets had fallen on the first day of the Baroda-Bengal clash at Lahli, 17 more fell on the second day as Baroda beat Bengal by 15 runs to claim six points. Both the teams were bowled for identical 133 runs in the second innings. Set a target of 155 runs, Bengal were bowled out in 46 overs. They were four down for 40 runs and the burden was straightaway on captain Manoj Tiwary. He added 54 runs for the fifth wicket with Pankaj Kumar Shaw and looked like taking Bengal through when Sagar Mangalorkar trapped him leg before wicket. Bengal then lost four wickets for just 18 runs with Sreevats Goswami stuck at the other end.

The wicketkeeper-batsman added 21 with Mukesh Kumar for the last wicket as the match headed for a tense finish. The pressure resulted in a run-out of No. 11 Kumar as Baroda completed an outright victory.

Punjab vs Tamil Nadu: Punjab 1st inn 284/10 in 100.2 overs (Manan Vohara 73, Uday Kaul 56, Gitansh Khera 40*, Vignesh K 4/104) lead Tamil Nadu 218/4 (Kaushik Gandhi 75, Dinesh Karthik 54) by 66 runs

Punjab added 43 runs to their overnight score and lost four wickets to be bowled out on second day’s morning session for 284. Aswin Crist picked two wickets and Vignesh K added one more to his tally. Batting overnight on 23, Gitansh Khera remained unbeaten on 40 as he ran out of partners.

The morning session saw plenty of action as Tamil Nadu lost both their openers Abhinav Mukund and L Suryapprakash before the lunch break. Manpreet Singh Grewal removed Suryapprakash for 11 and captain Mukund was out for 23, bowled by Sandeep Sharma. Greweal took his second wicket with Baba Indrajith handing a catch to Khera for 16.

No. 3 Kaushik Gandhi and Dinesh Karthik then built and important partnership of 85 runs for the fourth wicket to bring back Tamil Nadu’s innings on track. Karthik brought up his fifty in 86 balls and also helped the team cross the 150-mark in 52.3 overs. However, he departed soon as Rajwinder Golu broke the crucial stand. No. 6 Vijay Shankar then provided able support as Tamil Nadu built another valuable stand of 62 runs. At Stumps on Day 2, Tamil Nadu trailed Punjab by 66 runs.

Gujarat vs Mumbai in Hubli: Gujarat 1st inn 437 in 160.1 overs (Priyank Panchal 232, Samit Gohil 87, M Juneja 48, Vishal Dabholkar 6/118) lead Mumbai 58/3 (Shreyas Iyer 26*, Jasprit Bumrah 2/11) by 379 runs

For second straight day, Gujarat dominated Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai in Hubli. Batting overnight on 122, Priyank Panchal went on to get his maiden double century and got crucial partnerships worth 47 and 42 runs for eight and ninth wicket respectively after sharing a 85-run stand for the fourth wicket with Manpreet Juneja, who missed his fifty by two runs. For Mumbai, Vishal Dabholkar picked six wickets for 118 runs in 43.1 overs.

Barring himself, Mumbai captain Aditya Tare made every other member in his team bowl as Gujarat’s innings lasted for 160 overs.

Complementing their superb batting show, Jasprit Bumrah came out all guns blazing, snaring two wickets in his first two overs without conceding a run. He first got through the defence of Jay Bista and and then had Akhil Herwadkar caught behind for just five as Mumbai lost first two wickets with just five runs on the board. Shreyas Iyer (27) then added 53 runs with skipper Aditya Tare (26) but Mumbai suffered another blow when Tare was caught and bowled by Karan Patel. Sent in as night-watchman, Dhawal Kulkarni played out three balls.

Madhya Pradesh vs Railways in New Delhi: Railways 1st inn 249/2 in 90 overs (Nitin Bhille 102*, S Wakaskar 62, A Gosh 61*)

Railways won’t be pleased with their batting efforts on Day 2 after being bowled out for 371 runs. Resuming on overnight score of 249/2 with Nitin Bhille on 102, Bhille was dismissed without anything more to his total. Captain Karn Sharma made a patient 44 off 104 balls and later No. 10 Anureet Singh remained unbeaten on 40 to help Railways go past the 350 runs mark. Madhya Pradesh’s Ankit Sharma was picked six wickets for 108 from 44.3 overs.

However, Railways did inch ahead after restricting Madhya Pradesh to just 71 runs in the 40 overs of play for three wickets. Avinash Yadav picked two wickets after Karn had trapped opener Aditya Srivastava for four.
