Mohammed Kaif to lead Ranji debutants Chhattisgarh

Former India batsman Mohammad Kaif has been named captain of the Chhattisgarh Ranji team for the 2016-17 season. The domestic veteran will be in charge of the team making their Ranji debut in the upcoming season. The announcement was made by Chhattisgarh State Cricket Sangh in Raipur.

Kaif, who has played 13 Tests for India and 125 ODIs was in last season associated with Andhra. Earlier, he led Uttar Pradesh to their maiden Ranji Trophy triumph in 2005-06 where they beat Bengal in the final on the basis of the first innings lead.

Kaif, who had successfully led the India U-19 team to World Cup glory has a staggering 9974 first-class runs from 177 games with 19 centuries and 58 half-centuries. The State Association also appointed Mumbai wicketkeeper Sulakshan Kulkarni as the team’s coach. Kulkarni was Mumbai Ranji Team’s coach from 2011-14 and was in charge when they won the title for 40th time in 2012-13.
