India strike twice before rain washes out two sessions

Play on day one of the fourth Test between West Indies and India was severely hampered as two sessions were lost due to rain and damp outfield at the Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain. After the start of play was delayed by half-an-hour, play was called off at 2.00 PM local time with West Indies on 62/2.

Only 22 overs were bowled in the day after the home team won the toss and elected to bat first. The Indian bowlers were impressive with the new ball, troubling openers Kraigg Brathwaite and Leon Johnson consistently. There was no respite for Johnson, who survived the opening spell of Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami as he was caught at short leg by Rohit Sharma for nine off the first ball of Ishant Sharma’s first over of the match. A brief 17-run partnership later, Darren Bravo was bowled by R Ashwin in his second over.

After lofting the fourth ball of the 15th over for a four, Bravo was beaten by a classical off-spinner’s delivery that pitched on leg and clipped the off stump. Earlier, India made two changes to their side with M Vijay replacing Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara coming in place of all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The West Indies left out Alzarri Joseph and included Devendra Bishoo.

The play on second day will start at 9.30 AM local time (7:00 PM IST) and 98 overs are to be bowled, weather permitting
