Stats Highlights: SA vs Ind, 2nd Test, Day 2

Murali Vijay (97) just missed the opportunity to score his first Test ton in an away Test. He became the fifth Indian to be dismissed in 90s on South African soil, after MS Dhoni, VVS Laxman, Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli.

India were 198 for one at one stage, but lost their next three wickets for only one run. Again, they were 320 for five, but lost their next five wickets for only 14 runs.

Ajinkya Rahane (51*) made his maiden Test 50 in his third Test.

Jacques Kallis completed 200 catches in Test cricket when he caught Ravindra Jadeja off the bowling of JP Duminy. He became only the second fielder after India’s Rahul Dravid (210) to accomplish this feat.

Interestingly, Dravid had taken his 200th catch against South Africa at Durban on December 27 (2010). Kallis emulated him at the same ground on the same day, three years down the line!

Dale Steyn (6/100) took his 22nd five-wicket haul in Test cricket – his fifth against India.

Dale Steyn has now taken 199 wickets on home soil. Among the South Africans, only Mkhaya Ntini (249) and Shaun Pollock (235) have taken more wickets in matches at home.

Steyn has now taken six wickets in an innings on six occasions. Three of these instances (including his career best of 7/51) have come against India.

Steyn has now inflicted 12 ducks on batsmen in 2013 – the most by any bowler this year. Vernon Philander and Trent Bolt have accounted for 11 ducks each.

Zaheer Khan made his 29th duck in Test cricket – his fifth against South Africa. All five have come in South Africa.

Steyn has now taken 60 wickets against India – the most he has taken against an opponent, surpassing his tally of 58 against New Zealand.

AB de Villiers became the third South African wicketkeeper to effect five dismissals in an innings against India, after Dave Richardson and Mark Boucher. The latter performed this feat twice.

India’s total of 334 is the highest in India-South Africa Tests at Durban. South Africa had made 328 in 2006.
