Shikhar Dhawan (115) became only the second Indian opener to score a century in the fourth innings of an overseas Test after Sunil Gavaskar who scored four centuries in overseas Tests.
Dhawan is the fourth Indian opener to score a century in the fourth innings of a Test – home or away after Mushtaq Ali, Wasim Jaffer and Sunil Gavaskar.
Dhawan’s innings is the highest by an Indian opener in the fourth innings of a Test against New Zealand. The previous best was Navjot Singh Sidhu’s 98 at Hamilton in 1993-94.

The above win was New Zealand’s tenth against India. Eight of them have come at home.
The victory margin of 40 runs is the narrowest in Tests between India and New Zealand. India had beaten New Zealand by 60 runs at Mumbai Brabourne in 1969-70, which was the previous closest.
Since the start of England tour in July 2011, India have lost 10 out of last 11 overseas Tests – all four vs England, all four vs Australia in 2011-12, one (out of two) vs South Africa in 2013-14 and now one vs New Zealand.
The defeat gave MS Dhoni the dubious distinction of leading India to most defeats in overseas Tests. This was India’s 11th loss in an overseas Test under MS Dhoni. The previous record was of 10 defeats shared by Tiger Pataudi, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly.
India’s total of 366 is the second highest by any side in the fourth innings of a Test against New Zealand, after Australia’s 381 for seven at Perth in 2001-02.
India’s total is obviously their highest in the fourth innings of a Test against New Zealand, obliterating 262 for five at Bangalore in 2012.
