Mirpur, March 16: The feat the cricketing world had been waiting for finally arrived. Ironically, it wasn’t the biggest story of the day. Sachin Tendulkar scored his staggering 100th international hundred, a milestone that, he later observed, had taken up too much media space the past year. As the emperor of cricket annexed this most precious of records, another event was slowly unfolding. Bangladesh crept up on India, and in a surprise finish, ended up on top of the game. This was just Bangladesh’s third win against India, made possible by a valiant effort from Shakib Al Hasan and others in the batting unit. Here’s the story of the unforgettable day in numbers.

Sachin Tendulkar (114) became the first batsman to score 100 hundreds in international (Tests+ODIs+T20Is) cricket. Incidentally, Tendulkar was also the first batsman to reach the milestones of 50 and 75 international hundreds.

Tendulkar has now scored an ODI hundred against all Test-playing nations. His previous highest against Bangladesh was 82* at Colombo SSC in the 2004 Asia Cup.

During his innings, Tendulkar also became the first batsman to hit 2,000 fours in ODIs.

Suresh Raina was dismissed for the first time against Bangladesh in ODIs, after scoring 237 runs in six innings with one hundred and two fifties.

Tamim Iqbal (70) equalled his highest score against India. He had made 70 off 86 balls at Dhaka in 2011.

The 113-run partnership for the second wicket between Tamim Iqbal and Jahurul Islam is Bangladesh’s highest for any wicket against India. The previous best was 112 between Alok Kapali and Mahmudullah for the sixth wicket at Karachi in 2008 Asia Cup.

Jahurul Islam (53) made his maiden ODI fifty, surpassing the 41 he made against Netherlands at Glasgow in 2010.

Mushfiqur Rahim became the sixth Bangladesh batsman to aggregate 2,000 runs in ODIs. He also became the first wicketkeeper to do so for Bangladesh.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s strike-rate of 184.00 (46* off 25 balls) is the highest for a Bangladesh batsman against India in an innings of 25-plus balls. Tamim Iqbal had managed 142.86 (60 off 42 balls) at this same ground in 2010 Idea Cup. Shakib’s strike-rate of 158.06 (49 off 31 balls) is now second best.

Incidentally, Mushfiqur’s strike-rate is now the third best by a Bangladesh batsman in an innings of 25-plus balls against any country, and the best ever against a Test-playing country.

Five batsmen crossed 40 in the Bangladesh innings – Tamim Iqbal (70), Jahurul Islam (53), Nasir Hossain (54), Shakib Al Hasan (49) and Mushfiqur Rahim (46*). This was the first instance in Bangladesh’s ODI history that more than three batsmen crossed 40 in a match.

Bangladesh registered their third win over India. Their previous two wins were by 15 runs at Dhaka on December 26, 2004 and by five wickets at Port-of-Spain on March 17, 2007 (in the World Cup). Incidentally, Bangladesh had lost eight matches in a row against India since that World Cup-win.

The win was Bangladesh's first against a Test-playing nation in the Asia Cup, and their third overall. The other two were by 116 runs against Hong Kong at Colombo SSC in 2004 and by 96 runs against UAE at Lahore in 2008 edition.

Bangladesh’s 293 for five is their highest successful chase in an ODI against a Test-playing nation. Their previous highest successful chase was 276 for seven against West Indies at Roseau in 2009. (Note: Bangladesh chased down 313 for six against Zimbabwe at Bulawayo in 2009 but Zimbabwe were not a Test-playing nation at that time).

Shakib Al Hasan received his first Man-of-the-Match award against India – his 12th in ODIs. Interestingly, Mashrafe Mortaza had won the award on both previous occasions when Bangladesh beat India.
