Stats Highlights, Eng v Ind, 2nd ODI

Southampton, Sept 7: While the first ODI provided some hope for Indian fans, the second promptly took it away on another rainy day. Battling the elements to begin with, the Indian side were in the end left battered by the England batsmen who wrapped up the 23 overs-a-side game with a commanding performance, led by captain Alastair Cook. For the struggling visitors, Ajinkya Rahane impressed with his maiden 50, but all the remaining numbers tell a different story. Take a look at the stats highlights from India’s sixth consecutive loss on the tour.

  • Ajinkya Rahane (54 off 47 balls) made his maiden fifty in his second ODI, beating the 40 he scored at Chester-le-Street on September 3, 2011.
  • Only five Indian batsmen – Navjot Sidhu, Gagan Khoda, Sandeep Patil, WV Raman and Robin Uthappa – have aggregated more runs than Rahane in their first two ODIs.
  • Graeme Swann (three for 33) recorded his best bowling performance against India, bettering the two for 21 at Bengaluru on November 23, 2008.
  • Tim Bresnan has taken his tally of wickets against India to ten from three games at an average of 14.50.
  • Craig Kieswetter’s strike-rate of 184.00 is the highest by any England opener scoring at least 25 runs against India. Kevin Pietersen had made 31 off 22 balls (SR 140.90) at Bengaluru on February 27, 2011.
  • Alastair Cook’s strike-rate of 126.98 is his best in an innings of 50 or more. He had scored an unbeaten 95 off 75 balls against Sri Lanka at Nottingham on July 06, 2011 at a strike-rate of 126.66
  • Cook’s six off R Ashwin was only the second in his ODI career of 33 matches. His only other six had come against Bangladesh at Mirpur on March 2, 2010.
  • Cook has now aggregated 538 runs in 10 matches as England’s captain. He has the best batting average among all players who have led their respective countries in at least 10 matches. Australia’s Michael Clarke is second with an average of 54.79 (1315 runs in 32 games).
  • India have now lost both their ODIs to England at this venue – by 104 runs on August 21, 2007 and by seven wickets on September 6, 2011.
  • Of the seven ODIs played at this venue, England have won five and lost only two.
