Stats Highlights, England v India, 4th ODI

London, Sept 11: In what turned out to be a thrilling yet offbeat finish, England and India ended on a tied score under the Duckworth/Lewis system in the penultimate game of the five-ODI series. The hosts have now taken an unassailable series lead with a game to go in Cardiff. This was the second such result between the two teams in five ODIs and only the second time that a tie has resulted under the D/L method. While Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni notched up a record fifth-wicket Indian partnership against England, Ravi Bopara registered his highest ODI score to take his team to the brink of victory.

Take a look at the numbers that matter from a game that brings back memories of the tied World Cup 2011 encounter between the two sides.

  • The match produced the 25th tie in ODIs – the second between India and England in the last five games. These two teams were also involved in a thrilling tie at Bengaluru in the ICC World Cup 2011.
  • This is only the second time that an ODI has been tied under D/L. The only other instance was in an ICC World Cup 2003 game between South Africa and Sri Lanka at Durban.
  • India have now been involved in five ties – twice against Zimbabwe and England each and once against West Indies. On one occasion, the scores were level (v Pakistan at Hyderabad in 1987). India, however, were declared winners on account of losing fewer wickets.
  • The partnership of 169 runs between Raina and Dhoni is India’s best for the fifth-wicket against England. The pair obliterated the previous record stand of 142 between Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina at Margao in 2005-06.
  • The above partnership also equals India’s highest partnership for any wicket against England in England. Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid had put together 169 for the fourth wicket at Chester-le-Street in 2002.
  • Incidentally, the previous highest record partnership for India at Lord’s was the 131-run unbroken partnership between Rahul Dravid and Yuvraj Singh, also for the fifth wicket, in 2002.
  • Suresh Raina (84) made his highest score against England. Hos previous highest was an unbeaten 81 at Faridabad in 2006.
  • Incidentally, Raina’s innings is the third highest by an Indian at Lord’s after Sourav Ganguly’s 90 in 2004 and Mohammad Kaif’s unbeaten 87 in 2002.
  • This was Raina’s first fifty in 17 innings in 2011.
  • India (280 for five) recorded their second highest total at Lord's – the highest remains 326 for eight against England in 2002.
  • Ravi Bopara (96) registered his highest ODI score, beating his 60 against South Africa at Chennai during 2011 World Cup.
  • The tie gave England an unassailable lead in the series. England have now beaten India in four consecutive bilateral series – by 4-3 in 2007, by 2-1 in 2004 and 2-0 in 1996.
