Stats Highlights, Ind v Eng, 5th ODI

Kolkata, Oct 25:  It’s a clean sweep for India with five consecutive wins against the floundering England. Bouncing back after a bleak English summer where they had suffered a similar whitewash in all formats of the game, MS Dhoni and his men have earned themselves a dazzling Diwali celebration. With the skipper starring with the bat (he scored an unbeaten 75) and Ravindra Jadeja grabbing a four-for, the Indian team scripted – and played out – the dream comeback after the disastrous England tour. Take a look at the numbers that matter from the final ODI of the series at the Eden Gardens.

  • Alastair Cook won the toss for the fourth consecutive time in the series. MS Dhoni had won the toss in the first ODI at Hyderabad.
  • Cook has, in fact, won the toss in nine out of the last 10 matches and 13 of the last 15 matches that he has led England.
  • MS Dhoni, on 55, completed 4,000 runs in ODIs as captain. He became the third Indian after Mohammad Azharuddin (5239) and Sourav Ganguly (5104) and the tenth captain in ODIs to do so.
  • MS Dhoni – with four sixes here – became the leading six-hitter in ODIs on Indian soil, moving ahead of Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 71 sixes. Dhoni has now hit 73 sixes in 70 innings at home. Tendulkar’s 71 sixes came in 160 innings.
  • The first-wicket partnership of 129 between Craig Kieswetter and Alastair Cook is England’s best for this wicket against India in India. Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell had added 107 runs at Jamshedpur in April 2006.
  • MS Dhoni has not been dismissed in six consecutive innings (all against England). He has now aggregated 340 runs in these six innings – 78* at Lord’s on Septemeber 11, 50* at Cardiff on September 16, 87* at Hyderabad on October 14, 35* at Mohali on October 20, 15* at Mumbai Wankhede on October 23 and 75* at Kolkata today (he did not bat at Delhi on Oct 17).
  • Dhoni’s 340 runs in six innings are the second most aggregated by a batsman in ODIs without being dismissed. The record is held by South Africa’s Lance Klusener who aggregated 396 runs in nine consecutive unbeaten innings between February and June 1999.
  • Ravindra Jadeja (four for 33) took four wickets in a match for the second time in his ODI career. He had figures of four for 32 against Sri Lanka at Cuttack on 22.12.2009
  • Jadeja is the third Indian left-arm spinner to take four wickets in an ODI against England after Ravi Shastri (four for 40 at Nagpur on 23.01.1985) and Yuvraj Singh (four for 28 at Indore on 17.11.2008).
  • England were 129 for no loss at one stage, but lost their last nine wickets for only 47 runs in 100 balls.
  • India swept England 5-0 in the series; this is their second such feat against the visitors. They had beaten England 5-0 in 2008-09 too.
  • This is the third occasion where India have won a bilateral series 5-0. Apart from two such series wins against England, India had also beaten New Zealand 5-0 at home in 2010.
  • The win was India’s ninth in consecutive matches at home – their best winning sequence at home. India had won seven consecutive games at home between December 1981 and October 1983.
  • India have now lost only twice in their last 25 matches at home. Both the defeats came against South Africa. During this period, India won 21 matches, one match was tied and one offered no-result.
  • India are now unbeaten in their last 13 matches against England at home (this includes the tied game in World Cup 2011). They have now won 16 of their last 18 matches against England in India.

  • MS Dhoni won his sixth Man-of-the-Series award. Only Sachin Tendulkar (14) and Yuvraj Singh (7) have won more awards than Dhoni for India. Sourav Ganguly also has six such awards against his name.
