Mumbai, Aug 18: Indian batting legend VVS Laxman bids adieu to the game of cricket, leaving behind a treasure of memories for fans around the world. From his unforgettable innings of 281 to emerging as India’s second innings hero in recent years, we provide you a quick glimpse of VVS Laxman’s career highlights.

  • Born November 1, 1974 in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh.
     
  • Scored 0 and 17 in his first-class debut against Punjab for Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy quarter-final of 1992-93.
     
  • Posted scores of 88*, 5, 151*, 77, 36 & 84 in three Tests on the Australia Under-19 tour of India in 1993-1994.
     
  • Scored his first Ranji Trophy century against Kerala in December 1994 with an innings of 103 batting at No. 4.
     
  • Scored 532 runs in five matches with two centuries for Hyderabad in the 1994-95 Ranji Trophy season. Laxman followed this performance up with an even better 1995-96 Ranji Trophy season where he scored 775 runs, which included three centuries. 
     
  • Made his Test debut against South Africa at Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera, Ahmedabad in November 1996 where he posted scores of 11 and 51. 
     
  • Opened the innings for India in Tests for the first time in March 1997 against West Indies at Sabina Park. In two innings, Laxman scored 64 and 27. In all, Laxman opened the batting (batted at No. 1 and No. 2) in 25 innings in Tests for India. 
     
  • Made his ODI debut against Zimbabwe at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on April 9, 1998. Batting at No. 3, Laxman scored a duck.
     
  • Scored a staggering 1415 runs in nine matches from 14 innings in the 1999-00 Ranji Trophy season, which included eight centuries at an average of 108.84. Laxman’s highest first-class score was posted in this season when he scored 353 against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy semi-final against an attack that comprised the likes of Venkatesh Prasad, Dodda Ganesh and Sunil Joshi. 
     
  • Posted his first Test century with a sparkling 167 in the Sydney Test of January 2000 against Australia while opening the innings for India.
     
  • Scored an incredible 281, which included a 376-run stand with Rahul Dravid, that helped India avoid certain defeat and make a remarkable comeback to win the Kolkata Test of March 2001 against Australia. At that time, this was the highest Test score posted by an Indian.
     
  • He continued his good form against the Aussies by reaching his first ODI century with an innings of 101 at Nehru Stadium, Margao on April 6, 2001. 
     
  • Won the Arjuna Award in 2001.
     
  • Named Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2002.
     
  • Involved in two 300-plus run stands during the Australia Test series of 2003-2004. At Adelaide, in December 2003, his 303-run stand with Rahul Dravid sets India up for a sensational four-wicket win while in Sydney, in January 2004, his 353-run partnership with Sachin Tendulkar denied Australia the chance of pulling off a series win. 
     
  • Played his last ODI game for India against South Africa at Centurion on December 3, 2006. Over 86 ODI games, Laxman scored 2338 runs at an average of 30.76. Of his six ODI centuries, four came against Australia alone.
     
  • Made his English county debut for Lancashire in a four-day game against Hampshire in August 2007.
     
  • Captained the Deccan Chargers in the inaugural season of IPL 2008.
     
  • Posted his second and only other double century in Tests with an unbeaten 200 against Australia in the Delhi Test of 2008.
     
  • Set India up for stunning fourth innings chases with knocks of 103* and 73* in the Colombo and Mohali Test of 2010 against Sri Lanka and Australia respectively. His knock of 96 in India’s second innings in the Durban Test of 2010 helped India level the three-match series score against South Africa 1-1.
     
  • Laxman is the fourth highest run-getter for India in Tests. His 8781 runs puts him behind Sachin Tendulkar (15470), Rahul Dravid (13265) and Sunil Gavaskar (10122).
     
  • Of his 17 Test centuries, six have come against Australia alone. This puts Laxman third on the list of Indian batsmen with most Test centuries against Australia. Only Sachin Tendulkar (11) and Sunil Gavaskar (8) have scored more Test 100s against the Aussies. 
     
  • Laxman has struck 12 and 9 century partnerships with Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar respectively in Tests. Cumulatively, Laxman’s partnerships with both batsmen aggregate to 4065 and 3523 runs respectively.
     
  • With 135 catches, VVS Laxman has taken the second highest number of catches by an Indian in Tests. Only Rahul Dravid, with 209 catches, has taken more catches than Laxman.
