Mumbai, Nov 1: The 77th edition of the Ranji Trophy couldn’t have started off in a more dramatic fashion as Hyderabad crashed to the lowest ever total in Ranji Trophy history. Deepak Chahar, making his debut for Rajasthan, helped himself to eight wickets as Hyderabad fell for a paltry score of 21 runs. Chahar’s efforts helped break the record for the lowest team total, when Southern Punjab were bowled out for 22 chasing 114 against Northern India in Amritsar, set in the first edition of the tournament in 1934-35.
In reply, Rajasthan got off to a robust start, posting a total of 220 for 2 at the end of day’s play with captain Hrishikesh Kanitkar helping himself to an unbeaten century. The other centurions on Day one of the new Ranji Trophy season were Arindam Das for Bengal (150*) and Wasim Jaffer for Mumbai (138).
The bowling stars of the day, other than Deepak Chahar, were Samad Fallah for Maharashtra (5-98) in the game against Jammu and Kashmir and Basanth Mohanty (5-24) who spearheaded Baroda’s collapse for a mere 99 runs against Orissa.
