Mumbai, August 28: During the felicitation ceremony of the World Cup-winning India U19 team, BCCI Hony. Secretary, Mr. Sanjay Jagdale and Hony. Jt Secretary, Mr. Anurag thakur gave away the prize money announced earlier by BCCI president, Mr N. Srinivasan to the players and support staff. Each player of the triumphant India U19 team received Rs.20 lakhs. The support staff, which included fielding coach R. Sridhar, physiotherapist P.R. Srinivas Rao, trainer V.P. Sudharshan, video analyst Sanju Singh and coach Bharat Arun were given Rs.15 lakhs each for guiding the colts in Australia.
While speaking at the occasion, Mr. Jagdale said, "26th August has been a great day for Indian cricket. Beating Australia in Australia is a great achievement. Whole India is proud of you. If you fail to prepare, then you are preparing to fail. So, a lot of credit goes to coach Arun and selector Abey Kuruvilla.”
Mr. Jagdale also appreciated the build up to the World Cup and those who played a hand in ensuring the team was well prepared for the tournament. He said, “We had a four-nation series at Vizag. Then four-five camps at NCA (National Cricket Academy); I must congratulate NCA. There was the four-nation tournament in Australia to help the team acclimatise to Australian conditions; and then, the Asia cup in Kuala Lumpur. After a couple of close matches, [including one] against Pakistan, we knew that the team had the mettle and will go a long way.”
He added, “The domestic season is about to start, so keep the focus and don't lose this hunger. We are all proud of you and keep it up.”
Mr. Anurag Thakur also praised the U19 team for proving themselves on the world stage. He said, “It is not just a victory, it is a matter of pride for all Indians. I am honoured and proud to welcome the victorious Indian cricket team. BCCI has put in a lot of effort in nurturing these boys. We lost the first match in the World Cup, but we always knew that the team had the mental strength to go on and win the cup. Mental toughness is much more important than skills. These boys have to play a bigger role. A tough season awaits you in the domestic circuit.”
He added, "Welcome to the man's world. Lead a disciplined life and I wish you all the best for the future.”
