Ind v SL - 2011 CWC Final: A numbers guide

Mumbai, April 3: On April 2, 2011, India became only the third nation to win the cricket World Cup on more than one occasion. During their match-winnings innings, Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni went past the 4000-run and 6000-run mark respectively in ODIs. We give you a quick glimpse of these and other statistical highlights from today’s 2011 ICC World Cup game between India and Pakistan.

 1: MS Dhoni became the first captain to win the World Cup in both formats of the game - ODIs and T20Is.

1: Suraj Randiv became the first player ever to feature in a World Cup final without having played a single game earlier in the tournament.

2: Indiawon the World Cup for the second time after winning it in 1983. They became only the third side after Australia (4) and West Indies (2) to win the coveted trophy on more than one occasion.

3: The first three overs bowled by Zaheer Khan were all maidens. Zaheer became the first bowler to bowl three consecutive maidens in the World Cup final (Australia’s Glenn McGrath had also bowled three consecutive maidens in the 1999 World Cup, but they were not his first three overs).

6: Number of batsmen to score a century in a World Cup final. Mahela Jayawardene emulated Clive Lloyd (in 1975), Viv Richards (in 1979), Aravinda de Silva (in 1996), Ricky Ponting (2003) and Adam Gilchrist (2007). Except for Jayawardene, all others ended on the winning side.

7: Number of times Dhoni has won an ODI with a six – the most by any batsman in ODI history.

21: Number of wickets taken by Zaheer Khan in the 2011 ICC World Cup – joint highest by a bowler in the tournament, along with Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi.

35: Runs conceded by Zaheer Khan in his last two overs. He had conceded only 25 runs in his first eight overs.

44: Number of wickets taken by Zaheer Khan in the World Cup. He equalled Javagal Srinath’s record of most wickets in World Cup competitions by an Indian.

277:Runs scored by India – highest successful chase by a team in a tournament final played under lights.

500:Runs scored by Tillakaratne Dilshan in the tournament – the most by any batsman. Sachin Tendulkar ended second with 482 runs. Incidentally, Dilshan is the first batsman to have aggregated exactly 500 runs in a tournament.

3000: Yuvraj Singh completed 3000 runs on Indian soil. He is only the fifth batsman to do so.

4000: Gautam Gambhir reached the 4000-run mark when he scored his 24th run. He became the 11th Indian to do so.

6000:    MS Dhoni completed 6000 runs in ODIs when his score reached 42. He became the seventh Indian batsman to do so. Dhoni is also only the third wicketkeeper after Adam Gilchrist and Kumar Sangakkara to reach this landmark.
