Stats Highlights: Ind v Aus, 3rd Test, Day 5

After registering a six-wicket win in the Mohali Test, Team India reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, thanks to an unassailable 3-0 series lead. This victory also marked skipper MS Dhoni’s seventh win against the men from Down Under in as many home Tests – thereby maintaining his 100 percent record against them. Dhoni also broke Sourav Ganguly’s record of most Test wins by an Indian captain against a particular opponent.

Here are these and other stats highlights from Day 5 of the fourth Test of the series:

Ravindra Jadeja has now dismissed Michael Clarke five times in this series. Clarke’s figures against Jadeja make an interesting reading:

Incidentally, among spinners, only Anil Kumble has dismissed Clarke more often (six times) than Jadeja.

India have now beaten Australia in six consecutive home Tests. They have also not suffered a single defeat against Australia in a home Test since the Mumbai Test in 2004-05. India have won eight and drawn two matches.

These six consecutive defeats in India equal Australia’s worst losing streak in any country. They had also lost six Tests in a row in South Africa between 1967 and 1994.

Australia have now lost 13 Tests after scoring 400 runs in the first innings. Interestingly, five out of the last six such defeats have come against India.

This is only the third time when India have won three consecutive Tests in a series. The other two occasions were against England and Zimbabwe in 1993. However, this is the first time India have won three consecutive Tests in a series of more than three matches.

Last time Australia lost 3 consecutive Tests in a series was in 1988-89 when they lost to West Indies at home.

This win was India’s seventh against Australia under MS Dhoni. In all Test cricket, only three captains – West Indies’ Clive Lloyd (12), England’s Mike Brearley (11) and WG Grace (8) – have won more Tests against Australia than Dhoni.

All 10 Tests – in which Dhoni has led India against Australia – have produced results. Dhoni has won all seven in India and lost all three in Australia.

Australia have now lost all three Tests played at Mohali. They lost by 320 runs in 2008 and by one wicket in 2010.

Incidentally, India’s only loss at Mohali came in the inaugural Test (against West Indies in 1994) at this venue. Since then, they are undefeated here, in 10 Tests.

Australia’s defeat provided the first instance in Test history of a side losing after scoring 400 runs in a five-day Test in which a day was lost to rain.

Dhoni’s seven wins against Australia are the most by an Indian captain against a particular country. Sourav Ganguly had won six against Zimbabwe.
