Thanks to a six-wicket win in the Delhi Test, Team India completed an unprecedented 4-0 whitewash against the visiting Australian team. As a result of this perfect series scoreline, MS Dhoni’s men have managed to equal India’s best Test winning streak. This also happens to be only the second instance of the Australians ending up on the losing side of a 4-0 result in a four-match series.
Here are these and other stats highlights from Day 3 of the 4th Test between India and Australia:
India won the series 4-0 after winning this Test by 6 wickets. This is first time India have won four Tests in a series.
Australia lost all Tests of a four-match series for only the second time. The only other such instance was against South Africa in South Africa in 1969-70.
Australia have now lost seven Tests in a row on Indian soil (one in 2008, two in 2010 and four in 2013), which is the worst losing streak for any visiting side on Indian soil. Sri Lanka had lost six in a row between 1986 and 1994.
The seven consecutive defeats in India mark Australia’s worst losing streak in any country. They had lost six Tests in a row in South Africa between 1967 and 1994.
This is the first time in Test history that a side won a series 4-0 after getting blanked 4-0 against the same opponents in the earlier series!
India's four wins in a row in this series also equal their best winning streak in Tests. They had also won four consecutive Tests in 1992-93 and 2009-10 seasons.
MS Dhoni became first captain to win a series 4-0 after losing the toss in all four!
Delhi Test provided the eighth instance of India winning a Test within three days. This was the second such instance against Australia, after the Mumbai Test in 2004-05.
MS Dhoni has now won eight Tests against Australia. Only two captains – West Indies’ Clive Lloyd (12) and England’s Mike Brearley (11) – have won more Tests against Australia than Dhoni (England’s WG Grace also had a tally of eight wins).
Ravindra Jadeja took his first five-wicket haul in Test cricket.
MS Dhoni’s stumping of Peter Siddle was his fifth in the series. He now holds the record of effecting most stumpings in a series for India against Australia. Farokh Engineer and Syed Kirmani had made four stumpings each in 1969-70 and 1977-78 respectively.
Dhoni’s 14 dismissals in the series (9 catches and 5 stumpings) are also the most by Indian wicketkeeper in a series against Australia, equalling Syed Kirmani’s record in 1979-80 series.
R Ashwin ended the series with 29 wickets against his name – the third best performance by an Indian bowler in a series against Australia. Harbhajan Singh took 32 wickets in the three-match series in 2000-01, while Bishan Singh Bedi took 31 in the five-match series in Australia in 1977-78.
Peter Siddle became first No.9 batsman to top-score in both innings of a Test.
