U-19 Cooch Behar Trophy: Mah vs Mum

Maharashtra Under-19 were 228 for six against defending champions Mumbai Under-19 at the end of first day’s play of the Under-19 Cooch Behar Trophy in Pune.

After losing to Mumbai in the final of the coveted tournament last season, the Maharashtra colts will be looking to reverse the result on their home ground this time around. Opting to bat first, the home team lost the key wicket of Vijay Zol early in the innings.

Mumbai pacer Akash Parker, who had played a key role in the team’s semi-final victory and had claimed a five-for in the final last year, gave the visitors the important breakthrough. Atul Singh then followed up with the wickets of YJ Shaikh, JS Pande and SS Ranjane, while Amit Kadam broke the blossoming partnership between RT Sharma and NS Naik for 58. However, anchoring the innings, Sharma stitched a 95-run stand with Nirfal, until Singh struck to send back the former for 87 later in the day.

VP Nirfal (30) and SM Kazi (4) were at the crease when play ended.

Brief scores:

At the end of Day 1: Maharashtra U19 228/6 in 91 overs (RT Sharma 87, NS Naik 42, VP Nirfal 30*, SM Kazi 4*, Atul Singh 4/78)
